Parasite Case of the Week 6

Welcome back to the Parasite Case of the Week!  I post a new case every Monday, along with the answer to the previous week’s case.  Here is our new case for this week:

The following were seen under 40x magnification growing on tap water agar, 5 days after inoculation with brain tissue.  The patient had a slowly progressive meningoencephalitis.  Identification? What stages of this organism are seen in this image?

Naegleria fowleri. Cysts, trophozoites, and flagellated forms.

Acanthamoeba spp. The inner walled cyst is not entirely spherical to be Balamuthia spp. but does have a wrinkled outer wall. There appear to be some finger-like pseudopodia for the trophozoite form.

Acanthamoeba castellanii is a possibility.
